Plasma cutting is the most common process of cutting metals using the plasma arc.

Plasma devices can be used to cut all materials conducting electricity. In production, plasma cuts mainly black steel, stainless steel and aluminium. For plasma cutting of rusty, painted or dirty surfaces there is no need to clean the material beforehand.

For proper operation of plasma cutters, only a good electrical contact of the mass cable with the cut element is necessary. Plasma can be used to cut metal sheets, steel shapes, pipes or nets.

Using the plasma burner we can carry out various types of cutting. The most popular types include:

  • basic cuts - standard cutting of the workpiece from the edge,
  • bevelling - in this case, the burner is bevelled at a proper angle, so as to obtain a slanted edge after cutting,
  • grooving - thanks to the use of special operating parts, it is possible to create regular grooves in the processed material, thus removing, e.g. defective weld seams or separating previously welded elements,
  • cutting multiple metal sheets simultaneously - it is possible to cut several metal sheets at the same time after putting them in a stack,
  • template cutting - in the case of this type of cutting we pierce in the middle of the workpiece and then guide the burner (as in the case of basic cutting) along the previously prepared template,
  • mechanised cutting - after installing the system on the CNC table.

In conventional plasma systems four major elements can be distinguished:

  • Main plasma source;
  • plasma burner,
  • ground wire,
  • plasma cutting equipment.
